A Parisien Thunderstorm

It rained… No, it poured, this afternoon in Paris… There was a lovely thunderstorm and we sat and watched, and listened, to the show from the balcony of our flat. When the rain had passed, we ventured, by bus, up to Montmartre for a spell. We even bought some art! And after a lovely dinner at Chez Ginette, we took a cab to the Tour Eiffel for the lights. Lastly… we exercised the thighs of a poor pedi-cab fella… What a day! And Harold even got a special treat! Tres magnifique!

Harold in “the city of sweltering hot”

It was around 93 degrees today in Paris. Harold & I find that a tad extreme. I don’t suffer heat gladly, and the extreme temps are messing with my trip zhwah. In any case, Harold thinks the weather is a bummer… And he is consuming a fair amount of Pastis. Me too, also.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux did not immediately endear itself to us. For hours we had been driving peacefully through villages, markets and fields on the way from Angouleme, and then Bam! Traffic, off ramps, badly marked streets. Yuck. The next day, Bastille Day, we needed to return the car to the rental agency. It was a real Mr. Toads ride. Demonic parking structures, narrow, winding roads. Irritated police officers made for high blood pressure all around. And when, through the grace of serendipity and a temperamental GPS we found the agency, it was closed. A kindly couple directed us to park the cursed car and follow them to the office in the terminal, which we did, with gratitude.
Once we were on foot, life got sweeter. We found a tram, and in changing lines for our hotel, discovered the largest public square in Europe, Les Qinconces, and a huge fountain monument, Les Girondins. Incredible.
In the days that followed, we have discovered a lot of sweetness in Bordeaux. There are cafes with funny waiters who are helpful. There are parks with quirky art, children who ran through sprinklers with their dads, and merry go rounds with turn of the century artwork and really odd animals. There are ancient churches being restored to glowing beauty, one donated euro at a time.
Tomorrow, we catch the 11:18 train to Paris. I am anxious to get to what feels like our home away from home, the only familiar ground on this long journey. But I will miss Bordeaux. But we will see it again, sometime.

Happy Bastille Day in Bordeaux

Nelson: We’re in Bordeaux now, heading off to a barrel tasting tour. Really enjoyed the fireworks last night. There were thousands of people down by the river having a great time; no drunks, no Mexican firecrackers, no problems…and the best fireworks I’ve ever seen.

More of Angouleme

Harold really liked The city of Bande Dessinee. Everywhere cafes and cartoons… Harold remained pretty well sober although the Ricard Pastis was a regular antidote to the rather hot summer afternoons. It was much too toasty for my liking but the climate controlled BD Musee was a perfect sanctuary.

Letting the World go by in La Rochelle

20130708-212339.jpg

Nelson: The ladies did a lot of site seeing today, climbing the towers of La Rochelle, while I rested my bum knee. So I spent the day drinking wine and watching the tide come and go…and the youth sailing camp teach the kids to race. It’s a hard life, but someone has to do it.

La Rochelle is a tourist seaside resort much like Monterey, only bigger, busier and more historical; but I’ll let the ladies give the nickel tour,

Harold visits the machines…

The Machines on the Island of Nantes… Tres tres awesome! Harold was fascinated by the art + engineering + design… The steampunkness of the attractions and amazing vision appealed to Harold. He wishes he’d brought his goggles and aviation hat.
